You have probably
heard by now that one can get dentistry in Mexico at substantial savings. Real savings of 50-70% with dentists using the same materials and equipment ordered from the same international dental supply catalogs as your own dentist back home buys from.
But what about the quality of the dentistry in Mexico?
But what about the quality of the dentistry in Mexico?
In Mexico quality
is problematic and here’s why. General dentists in Mexico untrained in dental
implants, cosmetic dentistry, root canals etc. can legally
attempt advanced dental procedures by practicing on unsuspecting
patients.
This situation is the result of less consumer
protection laws. It used to be the same situation in the US and Canada decades ago.
But the Mexican government does not get
in the way of any general dentists in Mexico who want to learn advanced
dentistry the old-fashioned way – by trial and error on their patients (that’s
you and me).
From cantinas to cavities
But it gets worse - especially in the smaller Mexican border towns like Los Algodones, Nuevo Progreso etc. There you can find clinics which prey on desperate US and Canadian dental patients operated often by illegal alien unlicensed dentists from Central
America, the USA (really), dental school drop-outs and dental technicians playing dentist.
You will also find fine some looking clinics operated by absentee dentists, businessmen and American
Insurance companies, employing young Mexican dental school grads doing (attempting) specialist
work. They work for minimal wages being too poor to open their own clinic. And spend all day working on patients learning as they go.
Interestingly, space rental being a premium in these towns, many clinics are in former cantinas and brothels. Same horse, just painted a different color some might say.
May God protect you if you get one of those nice young Mexican dentists learning root canals in a discount dental clinic.
For the Spanish impaired, here's how to say "OUCH!" in Spanish: "Aaaay! Madre de Dios! Cuidado pinche' dentista!!"

The Mexican government shut 20% of the clinics in several border towns some years ago. But the dentist commandos came right back. There's too much easy money not to.
Here's the rotten tooth about online dental broker agencies.
What about all those new dental tourism agencies with clever names like WhateverDentist or DentureAdventures.com. Denture Adventures?
El problema -
Online dental tourism agencies accept any dentist’s listing who pays their fees whether they are a
general dentist inaccurately calling themselves a “specialist” (liars) or real bonafide certified specialists. You don’t know what kind of dental work you are going to get in these clinics.
If you are going to visit Mexico for advanced dentistry like crowns, bridges, implants, makeovers etc. - the only way to be sure that the dentist isn't in over his/her head and using you to practice root canals or oral surgery on is to find a board certified dentist.
Board certified dentists have 2-4 extra years in specialist college and have been tested and accredited by a specialist board. They are less than 1% of the dentists in Mexico. And typically cost the same as general dentists in Mexico. Finding one is the challenge.
